High Neutrophils Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Neutrophils are white blood cells that are responsible for fighting infection. These types of white blood cells comprise of 50 – 70% of the body’s white blood cells. To determine the neutrophil amounts that are in your body, a test that is known as Absolute neutrophil Count is usually used. When they become mature, the white blood cells help to fight bacteria, toxins as well as other substances that cause diseases. For the body to remain healthy, it is supposed to have a healthy amount of Neutrophils. In case of an increase of neutrophils in the body, several issues may arise.

High neutrophils causes

For neutrophils to be considered abnormally high, their levels are supposed to be over 8,000.  This condition can be as a result of a number of causes. These include:

  • Neutrophils are among the body’s first defense that helps to fight pathogens. After pathogens have gotten into the body, they may cause inflammation. This causes neutrophils to respond by going to the area that is infected. If the white blood cells don’t find an agent that causes the disease, they tend to self destroy. After bacteria have gotten into your body, the bone marrow will produce a huge number of cells. Whenever the body gets a fungal or parasitic infection, the cells will be found in big numbers.
  • Myelogenous leukemia. This is cancer that affects the blood as well as bone marrow. The disease gets its name from the fact that it negatively affects the myeloid cells, another type of white blood cells.
  • Arthritis. Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that usually affects the small joints of the hands as well as feet. It can be marked by painful swellings, joint deformity and bone erosion. One of the common types of the disease is gout which is marked by redness and pain in joints as well as severe and sudden tenderness attack. The disease commonly affects men. However, women who are in their menopause can also be affected by the condition.
  • Rheumatic fever. This disease will normally develop as a result of a strep throat that isn’t treated well. The inflammatory disease affects both adults and kids but it is common in kids who are aged 5 to 15. While the condition doesn’t cause neutrophils, it can cause permanent heart damage.
  • This is a serious condition that is common in pregnant women and causes seizures as well as high blood pressure. In case the condition isn’t treated quickly, it may result in death.
  • Kidney failure. This is a condition that commonly affect people who are critically sick particularly those who are in the ICU. The condition can occur when the kidneys become unable to filter waste products in blood causing waste in blood as well as chemical imbalance occurring in the blood.
  • Medical effects. Some drugs can also cause high neutrophils. Some of these drugs include Lithium carbonate that is used in the treatment of mania effect and corticosteroids that try to mimic the corticosteroid hormones. It is these hormones that control how the body uses water, nutrients as well as the quantities of salt in the blood.
  • Blood transfusion. Where a tremendous loss of blood occurs due to trauma, injury, surgery or nutritional deficiency, there will be a need for blood transfusion. This can also lead to high level of neutrophils.
  • Other causes. Certain factors such as physical stress, emotional stress, pregnancy and intense exercises can result to elevated levels of neutrophils.

Neutrophil does not have any symptoms by itself. Many patients will only learn that they have the condition after they have undergone a blood test for a condition that is totally unrelated. However, there are symptoms of other conditions that lead to high neutrophils that can be seen. For instance, infections will be part of the complications that are caused by neutrophils. The infection usually happens on the mucous membranes like the skin as well as inside of mouth. Some of the signs of the infections include:

  • Rashes
  • Wounds that doesn’t heal quickly
  • Abscesses

Some severe symptoms on infection can be marked by increased breathing as well as breathlessness.  Respiratory problems can also be as a result of lung infections

High Neutrophils Treatment

Before the doctor can treat a condition, he will first have to diagnose the underlying cause. This should be followed by:

  • Antibiotics or antiviral drugs: These can be effective in the treatment of infections where it is noted to be the underlying cause
  • Where cancer is the problem, the medical practitioner can prescribe anti-cancer drugs
  • In case of high neutrophils occurring in pregnant women, there is a need for the baby to be delivered expeditiously. It is also important to manage HBP.
  • Drugs like corticosteroids and the medications that modulate immunity can also be effective in the treatment of high neutrophils.
