Mucus Threads in Urine


Mucus is generally found in three forms; they are secretions, crystals or threads.  It is commonly found in the urinary tracts of men and women.To be exactly, the mucus can be seen in the urethra and penis of a man and in the vagina and uterus of a woman.The mucus is secreted by glands and also by the mucus membranes.The secretions are thin and fluid in appearance.

Since mucus traces are commonly seen in the urine, its presence is not considered as healthy hazardous.Everything too much is always cast some question marks.And in the case of the excess finding of mucus in urine then this will be a symptom of medical complication and need to be treated.This could be due to inflammation or infection in the urinary tract.

What are the reasons to cause mucus threads in urine?

  1. Normal Mucus discharge

Mucus produced from the urethra and urinary bladder lining area are mixed with the urine and flown out of the body.  The urethra and urinary bladder membranes are consisting of epithelial cells. During urination, few part of the mucus is blended with urine and passed out of the body that is not visible because of the refractive power.  Both the urine and mucus have the same level of refractive power.  The mucus contains proteins and to develop the proteins, the urine released from the kidney is used. In ladies during menstruation and ovulation time the cervical mucus and vaginal secretions are flown out along with the urine.

  1. Urinary Tract Infection

Bacterial infections in the genital areas are the one of the reason for Urinary Tract Infection, which is abbreviated in medical terms as UTI.  These bacteria once infected will find its way to the urinary bladder and start multiplying there and forming cystitis.  If proper treatment is not taken, it will affect the functioning of the kidneys which is known as pyelonephritis.  It will also badly damage the epithelium of mucus membrane and discharge epithelium in the form mucus threads through the urine.  This situation will result in frequent urination with pain, dribbling of urine, pain in the lower back portion and hypogastric pain.  A woman during their pregnancy period shall face UTI commonly because they cannot hold more urine in their bladder as it is compressed due to pregnancy.  They will have more mucus in urine during their pregnancy period.

  1. Mucus secretion due to Sexually Transmitted Disease

People suffering from sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia will be a reason to have mucus threads in their urine.  Unsafe sexual activities will be the reason for STD.  The mucus discharge will be in the form of white and yellowish for Chlamydia and gonorrhea respectively.

  1. Mucus discharge due to ulcerative colitis

People infected with ulcerative colitis can cause producing mucus.  It infects the bowels, and the colon will show marks of ulcers and erosions.  The patients will have bleeding diarrhea, fecal urgency, and pain in the lower abdomen side.  These patients urine will be mixed with the mucus from the anus resulting mucus threads in the urine.

  1. Irritable bowel syndrome

Patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome will have mucus in their urine.  The reason is, in such patients the urine shall get mixed up the mucus from the anus when they urinate and defecates at the same time.  Such patients will also have an irregular bowel movement for six and more months.

  1. Mucus thread due to kidney stone disease

Patients suffering from kidney stone disease will have mucus threads in the urine.  Kidney stone patients will have symptoms such as back and abdominal pain and dark colored urine.

  1. Mucus due to bladder cancer

The symptoms of bladder cancer are painful urination, blood in urine and pelvic pain.  People suffering from bladder cancer will have the chance of mucus thread in the urine.

How can you stop mucus thread forming in urine?

In a normal case, the presence of mucus threads in urine is not a worrisome issue. Unless you have some serious other medical issues related mucus thread discharge in urine, then you must consult a physician.   The following medication or practices can address the mucus thread issues.

  1. Consuming antibiotics

If you can take amoxicillin for one week or more can control the infection in the urinary tract and clear the infection that would have caused for creating mucus threads in urine.  For people suffering from STD diseases, erythromycin can be taken for a week or more which can clear the infection.  Both amoxicillin and erythromycin are antibiotics.

  1. Change in food habits

Changing food habits can do lot wonders in controlling the mucus production.  Especially, people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome shall not take foods that can harm the bowel movement. Some raw vegetables, foods that are highly acidic and carbonated drinks also must be avoided.  Balanced foods with more fiber content can control the irritable bowel syndrome and can control the mucus threads in urine.

  1. Consume anti-inflammatory medicines

Anti-inflammatory medicines such as sulfasalazine, corticosteroids, and mesalamine are good to treat ulcerative colitis.  Once the ulcerative colitis is treated the excess mucus production also will be under control.

As discussed earlier, a normal presence of mucus threads in urine should not be taken as a serious health issue.  If you are having persistent issues followed by pain and unusual discharge or blood stains in urine, it is advised to consult a physician immediately.  Administrating antibiotics for a regular interval, as per the nature of the infection can cure the disease.
