Signs of Infection After Miscarriage


Miscarriage is undoubtedly the most unfortunate event in a woman’s life. The term “miscarriage” is coined after the unfortunate loss of a new life during the tenure of pregnancy in a woman. Miscarriage is usually during the 19th week of pregnancy in woman i.e. before the 20th week begins to commence. Sometimes, a failure could also occur in advanced stages of pregnancy leading to severe complexions in a female that could also prove to be fatal. According to statistics, from various sources, approximately 10 – 15 % of pregnancies result in miscarriages. However, there could be circumstances where a miscarriage could take place at the beginning of the pregnancy. In such cases, the woman is not even aware of the unfortunate incident that has already occurred.

Some of the miscarriages even go unnoticed. According to various sources, approximately 80% miscarriages are said to occur within the initial three months of pregnancy. Any form of miscarriage that takes place after the 20th week of gestation is also called a late miscarriage. According to medical science, almost all the pregnancies that occur within the first trimester of pregnancy are a result of severe abnormalities related to the chromosomes in the baby. The woman also tends to develop certain infections after a miscarriage that could be severe. However, there are medications available which could be used to treat these infections and provide the necessary remedies.

Causes of miscarriage

As stated above, a miscarriage could occur as a result of chromosomal abnormalities within a baby. The chromosomes are minute and tiny structures that are present inside the cells of the body that in turn carries or contains the genes. These genes govern many of the physical attributes of a human being ranging from eye color, hair, sex and blood type.  Almost all the abnormalities occur by chance and is by no means related to the father’s or the mother’s health. Some of the other factors that might contribute to a miscarriage are as follows –

  • Sometimes continuous exposure to workplace hazards might result in a miscarriage
  • High level of blood sugar or diabetes could also be a reason
  • Abnormalities related to the uterus
  • Severe form of diseases related to the kidney
  • Thyroid disease
  • Severe form of malnutrition
  • Congenital form of heart disease
  • Certain form of medications might also lead to a miscarriage
  • Radiation
  • Some of the lifestyle factors in the form of excessive smoking, illegal drugs or alcohol
  • Infections
  • Hormonal problems
  • Incompetent form of cervix
  • Disorders related to the immune system

Other factors are contributing to miscarriages as well. The chances of miscarriage increase with increasing age in a woman. The percentages of miscarriages in woman increase considerably with increasing age especially, when women approach the age of 40 or so. There are higher chances of chromosomal abnormalities in babies when they approach higher thirties. Medical science has stated that physical stress should not be a considered as a potential factor of miscarriage. It has also been said, that, sex is not responsible for a miscarriage in a woman. On the contrary, necessary treatment of any form of chronic diseases in the mother will lead to successful pregnancy or, at least, increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

It is imperative to ensure that proper treatment is being done to avoid miscarriage and other associated complexions in pregnant women. Some of the symptoms that are associated with a miscarriage could be listed as follows –

  • Passing of tissue
  • Fever
  • Severe pain in the abdominal part
  • Cramps
  • Acute bleeding that might progress from being light to heavy

Any pregnant woman is experiencing the above – mentioned symptoms should immediately seek medical advice to avoid miscarriage.


The chances of infections in a woman with miscarriage increases if the tissue from the pregnancy is still present in the mother’s womb. This might result into the grave form of bleeding.

On examining the pelvis apparently, evidence of tissue that are projecting from the cervix could be traced. There are also chances of severe infection in case there is some form of a foul smell coming from a woman’s vagina. Infections might also lead to fever with accompanying high body temperature.

Some women have also complained of severe pain in the abdominal areas which is also a result of a miscarriage in a pregnant woman.


Obviously, medical advice is the first thing needed for the pregnant woman. They should seek medical advice at regular intervals during pregnancy to avoid infections thereby, reducing the chances of a miscarriage considerably. It is advisable for a woman to use sanitary napkins instead of tampons during pregnancy. A pregnant woman should also consider having regular showers instead of taking a bath. It is also advisable not to indulge in sexual intercourse till full recovery from the infections is made. Also, to the above, regular consumption of antibiotics is also very much needed.


A miscarriage is a bitter experience for women and has considerable after effects. However, there are certain considerations that women should keep in mind after a miscarriage. They are

They should consider becoming pregnant once again. However, some doctors may advise not to conceive once again if a substantial quantity of blood is lost. It is advisable to become pregnant or conceive within a month after a miscarriage. Women should also consider seeking expert advice to avoid successive miscarriages that may have severe adverse effects and psychological issues.
