There are many reasons why you may develop a bruised face, and most people know exactly why they developed a bruise. Normally, a bruise is a result of an accident or an injury. When you damage the tissue, the skin and the muscle tissue begin to collect pools of blood that are working to heal it. The presence of this blood beneath the skin causes a blue, purple or black welt to appear that can be extremely embarrassing. Until the blood is completely reabsorbed and the tissue heals, the bruise will remain. Fortunately, there are some home remedies and first aid tips that can hasten healing for a bruised face.
Limiting the Amount of Bruising on Your Face
With the right treatment, you can limit the amount of bruising on your face. Ideally, you will want to start one of these treatments right away so that you have as little bruising as possible.
An Ice Compress
One of the most common home remedies is a basic ice compress. During the first day after your injury, you should apply an ice pack to the bruised area for 15 to 20 minutes out of every hour. By doing this, you can reduce the amount of redness, swelling, inflammation and pain. To make an ice pack, all you need to do is put some crushed ice in a bag and wrap it with a cloth. You could also use a pack of frozen vegetables (peas are perfect for this) and wrap it in a cloth. While you are applying the ice pack, you want to make sure that you do not put too much pressure on the bruised area or it may cause more damage. You also want to make sure that you do not fall asleep with the ice pack on because it could cause frostbite.
Witch hazel is a wonderful, easy home remedy. In addition to reducing fine lines, healing the skin and fighting bacteria, it can also reduce swelling. The tannins in witch hazel are wonderful for your skin, and a bottle of witch hazel is extremely cheap to buy. Once you purchase a bottle, just follow the directions on the package to reduce your bruising.
Arnica oil can help reduce inflammation, pain, swelling and redness. After buying arnica oil, just apply it according to the directions on the bottle.
Take a Rest
Your body needs time to heal, and a good rest will help give your body a chance to do its work. Ideally, you should sleep with your head elevated so that the swelling is reduced. If you bruised areas around your eye, you will want to avoid doing exercise or heavy lifting for two days so that you does not aggravate the injury.
Try a Heat Compress
For the first 24 hours after your injury, you will want to use a cold compress to reduce swelling and inflammation. Afterward, you should switch to a warm compress because it will boost blood circulation at the site of the injury. When the blood circulation increases, it causes the immune system to activate and repair the injury. To make a warm compress, just get a clean wash cloth wet in warm water. Wring out the extra water before applying it to your bruise for 15 to 20 minutes. You can perform this procedure for every hour until your bruise is healed or you feel better.
Eat a Healthy Diet
For your body to heal, it needs to have the right tools. Eating a diet that is filled with vitamin K and C will ensure that your bruised face heals as fast as possible. While vitamin K is great for getting blood to clot and bruises to heal, vitamin C will help to prevent further bruising. You can get vitamin C from fruits like oranges, strawberries and lemons. Vitamin K is found in dark green vegetables like spinach and kale.
Vitamin K Cream
There are some medications and lotions that include vitamin K for healing. Applying a vitamin K cream to your bruise can be done to reduce swelling and bruising. Since each cream is slightly different, you should apply it according to the directions on the package.
Try Over-the-Counter Medication
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are normally taken for pain relief. Both drugs can also work to reduce inflammation. You should avoid using aspirin however because aspirin reduces blood clotting and can make your injury take longer to heal.
Getting Medical Help
A bruised face will normally heal on its own. If you think that you have a fracture or a head injury, you should get medical help immediately. Likewise, you should see a doctor if you have symptoms like loss of consciousness, nausea, vision changes, dizziness, vomiting, difficulty moving or vomiting. If you think that you have a concussion, you should not sleep for at least two to three hours and a friend should track your level of mental alertness.
