How to Induce Your Period

The average woman has a menstrual cycle that ranges from 24 to 34 days, although there are many women who have longer or shorter cycles. Once your period begins, it is normal for it to last for about two to eight days. Depending on your current stress levels, dietary changes and hormonal factors, your period’s length may vary greatly. Women who have irregular cycles may want to induce their period earlier. In addition, some women may want to have their period earlier so that it does not start on important days like the first day of school, during a wedding or on the first day of a new job. If you are trying to find out how to induce your period, the following tips can help.

How to Induce Your Period At-Home

Start Exercising

One of the main things that you can do to ensure that your period is on time every month is to get a proper amount of exercise. In addition to making your period come on time, exercise can also reduce the amount of cramps that you have to deal with. It also stimulates the abdominal muscles, which can get your period to come faster. Top exercises include sit-ups, jogging, stair walking or jogging.

Use Medicine

Birth control is typically made of a synthetic type of estrogen. By taking birth control, your levels of progesterone and estrogen are regulated so that you have have a stable menstrual cycle. During several days of the month, you are essentially taking a sugar pill. Since these pills lack estrogen, they cause your period to start on schedule. If you often have problems with an irregular menstrual cycle, birth control can help. For an immediate remedy, you can try crushing up two aspirin tablets, ½ teaspoon of honey and ½ teaspoon of sugar into ½ cup of water. This should help your period to come on time.

Change Your Diet

There are certain foods that are able to induce your period. Celery is a natural source of apiol, which increase blood flow to your pelvic region and uterine contractions. Meanwhile, a cup of warm water with a little honey can also help. An ancient Chinese remedy to boost blood circulation and limit blood clots is eating red dates before menstruating. Other foods like papaya, mango and pineapple can also help your period to start on time.

Try Herbal Remedies

There are some herbal remedies that have been used for years to start menstruation. Some are known as emmenagogues, which means that they help to induce your period by causing uterine contractions. Green tea, parsley and ginger tea are all considered emmenagogues. Drink two cups of parsley or ginger tea a day until your period starts. For an additional boost, pulsatilla, white peony and primrose oil are also effective.

Some women also use Dong Quai to get their period started. This works by increasing the blood flow and circulation to the uterus. It also boosts the strength of the uterus and can limit the intensity of menstrual cramps. Depending on your goal, you may want to take Dong Quai throughout the month, right before your period starts or during menstruation.

Have Sex

Like exercise, sex can increase the amount of blood flow to your genitals. It can also make your uterus contract naturally. Hormones that are naturally found in the semen can soften your cervix and prepare it for menstruation. Meanwhile, the act of having sexual intercourse will also make your vagina relaxed, which can help the uterine lining begin to shed.

Limit Your Stress Levels

Cortisol and adrenaline are chemicals that your body will normally release when you are under stress. When these hormones are present, it can stop your fertility hormones from being released. Fortunately, you can change this problem by limiting the amount of stress in your life and learning how to relax. Meditating, deep breathing, listening to music, taking a hot bath or going for a walk can help you to de-stress so that your period starts.

Use a Hot Compress

A hot water bottle, heating pad or just hot bath water can help to induce your period. If your period is late, spend some time soaking in a hot tub or relaxing with a heating pad on your lap every day until your period starts. You can boost this effect by drinking lukewarm water when you want to induce your period.

How to Induce Your Period Using Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a natural way to increase your estrogen levels. This increases uterine contractions and improves the growth of the uterine lining. At the same time, vitamin C stops the production of progesterone, which is normally required for a fetus to develop. Since vitamin C can cause a miscarriage, kidney stones and diarrhea, you may want to check with your doctor before doing this technique. At the very least, you will want to drink a lot of water while you are taking vitamin C.

  1. My last period was December 8th through December 12th and it’s January 10th now,my period was supposed to start on January 4th so it’s six days late now and my boyfriend and I don’t remember having sex between then but we’re freaking out,I’ve done four homemade pregnancy tests and they all showed negative but I’m scared. How can I make my period start? I’ve been drinking a lot of pineapple and orange juice and I had some strawberries and mangos the other day. What do I do??

    • Relax and don’t worry too much. A pregnancy test should have shown a positive result already, so it is unlikely that you are pregnant. The added stress of the holidays and worrying about being pregnant could have thrown off the timing of your cycle. In addition, other factors like diet, lifestyle or illness can do the same thing. I would relax and return to your normal diet. Your period should start soon enough.

  2. So I haven’t had a period since like March 2016 and now all of a sudden I have my period and the cramps are unbearable. I have pcos and am on metformin. My periods have always been irregular but just for the last two years it has gotten down to just 2 periods a year. My doctor said it is fine as long as I have 2 every year. The pain is unbearable when it comes to cramps and the flow is very heavy what can I do to help.

    • A hot water pack, pain medication and rest may be the only thing at the moment. You can also call or go to your doctor to see if there are alternatives available. Birth control can help prevent this in the future and may help your periods to become more regular and less intense. In addition, regular exercise can help reduce menstrual cramps. For your current menstrual cycle though, your main options are taking pain medication and trying to relieve the pain. If it gets too severe, you can always ask for an earlier appointment with your doctor.

  3. Hi, I’m so worried about my menstruation cycle. My date was 14 now it’s 27th. I’ve taken 3 st mom but still no bleeding. Please tell me should I take aspirin??or what to do? Please reply asap.

    • The first thing that you should do is take a pregnancy test. It is late enough that the pregnancy test will accurately show if you are pregnant or not. If you get a negative result, you can wait or go to the doctor to see if a health condition is causing your period to be late. If you are pregnant, you should go to the doctor. It is not safe to try to induce a miscarriage at home if you are pregnant. You can buy a pregnancy test at any dollar store, so spend the dollar, get the test and don’t risk your physical health when you may not even be pregnant.

  4. My last cycle was November 18th 2016, according to my period tracker I was supposed to start on the 17th of December. Yet it is now the 19th and no period. My cycles have varied anywhere in between 27-32 days. And I had sex a week ago for the only time in 2 months. Should I take a test?

    • While you may have had sex near your fertile time, I would not assume that you are pregnant quite yet. Even when you have a normal menstrual cycle, there can be times when an illness or lifestyle factors make your period a few days late. If you are worried, go ahead and take a pregnancy test. Otherwise, I would wait a few days and your period will probably start. If you used protection, then your period is probably just a little late.

  5. Hi my period date was 23in September and in October I got 27th..due to function in November I took primolut from November 23rd to November 27th dec 5th still I dint get period am I pregnant

    • It is possible that you are pregnant and it is possible that your body is having a late reaction. Take a pregnancy test in five days to gather additional information. Monitor the experiences that you are having. If you determine that you want to speak with a medical professional, then do so. Remain positive as you move forward. Best of luck, Sruti!

  6. My period was delaying so i have taken 4 tabs of aspirin to have my period started. Next day i started feeling that somethjng burning inside.i m too much afraid please tell me what to do now.

    • If your period is delayed, then it may be a sign that you are pregnant. It would be wise of you to wait until your body naturally beings the period. If you are concerned that you are pregnant, then it may be wise of you to take a pregnancy test in five days. Do not take any more aspirin. Reduce stress on your body at this time. Best of luck, Emc!

  7. I would like to ask if taking 2 aspirins together with the 1/2 tsp sugar and 1/2 tsp of honey and half a cup of water should be done in the morning or anytime of the day would be fine? Also, should it be taken empty stomach or after meal?

    Thank you very much.

    • Many people may have different experiences. It may be wise to do so after a small meal. However, if you determine that you have better success at different times and with different amounts of sugar or honey, then please let us know. We always appreciate insightful feedback. Have a great day, Leslie!

  8. My last period was August 31st-September 6, – 7 day cycle compared to my usual 5 day. My periods typically vary between 28-36 days. According to Eve, my period tracker app, I am 3 days late. But the cycle has been 37 days. I had sex for the first time last Friday, September 30th. We used a condom and he didn’t even cum inside of the condom.. literally lasted about 2 minutes and we stopped. I don’t think there is any possible way that I could be pregnant but the lateness is freaking me out? Wouldn’t it be too soon for this period anyways? I have been under a lot of stress from home… literally crying pretty much the whole month. And lately my eating and sleeping patterns have changed. It’s most likely just stress delaying the period, right? It’s way too soon for a home pregnancy test… I’m just really freaked out. And I know my worrying about this isn’t helping the situation…………..

    • The stress, changes to your eating patterns and lack of sleep are probably just delaying your period. If you have only had sex once and used a condom, then the chances of you being pregnant are fairly slim anyway, as long as you guys used the condom correctly. If you are still worried, take a pregnancy test–it is late enough for it to be accurate. You probably are not pregnant though; it is just the stress and lifestyle changes that are making your period so late.

  9. my lastperiod wad august 27 and accordibg to my calendar i am 13 days late..
dont feel anything changes..i also try 2 pt and both negative..
    i still dnt have period..
    what to do?

    • It could be lifestyle factors like stress, diet, exercise or medications that are making your period late. By this point, your pregnancy test should have been positive. As long as you do not have any other symptoms, I would wait until your menstrual cycle starts again. If you do experience any irregular symptoms, schedule an appointment with your doctor to get checked out. He or she could do a blood test (which are more accurate) to see if you are pregnant, or they may want to run other tests. As long as you do not have symptoms though, I would relax and wait for your menstrual cycle to finally arrive.

  10. I am 4 days late for my period and I know I am not pregnant. 2 days ago after a work out I saw ONE drop of blood thinking I got my period but didn’t. Can I crush 2 Aleve with the water, honey, and sugar? How long will that take to get my period?

    • It looks like you commented twice on this one. I have to approve each comment manually, so it may take me a little while to get around to all of them. If you do not see a response right away, do not worry because you will. Look through my initial response and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for commenting!

  11. I am 4 days late and I know I am not pregnant. 2 days ago after a work out I saw ONE drop of blood on my underwear. I thought my period would come but it didn’t. Can I crush Aleve and use that with the water, honey, and sugar? And how long will that take?

    • I would just wait it out. There is no reason to rush your period if you know that you are not pregnant. You mentioned that you were working out–there is an excellent chance that increased exercise made your period later if your body was not already used to it. Many lifestyle factors, illnesses, birth control, diet and exercise changes can cause your period to arrive early or late, so I would just relax and not worry about it.

  12. Last September 1 I have my ultrasound and to found out that my iud is low. Since then me and my husband try to abstain sex for a while until my menstrual period come. We do it twice. Last September 26 I decided to take Diane 35 and stop September 30. My period should be come October 1. What will I do its not the right time to get pregnant again?

    • Use a condom and get your IUD fixed. If you do not want to become pregnant and your birth control is not effective at the moment, then you will need to use an alternative form of contraception. In the meantime, go to your doctor and ask what the next steps are. If your period was supposed to arrive today, you can also take a pregnancy test to make sure that you are not already pregnant.

  13. I need your help i’m delayed for 2 days now, i should have my period this sept 24, and im being paranoid bec we havent sex just foreplay no penetration just grinding, is it possible that i can get pregnant?

    • If your sex was dry and only grinding, then you are not pregnant. If he orgasmed, then it is possible that you are pregnant as semen can find its way onto hands or clothing. That said, it is almost certain that you are not pregnant, so continue to monitor your period. It is likely that you will have your period soon, but if you do not, then take a pregnancy test in five days. Remain positive as you move forward, Riza.

  14. Comment:I had my period on 11th of august nd I had sex during my fetility days….nd now my period is delayin with jst a day….wat do I do

    • I would wait another few days before you take a pregnancy test. Your period may just be late, so I would not worry about it too much yet. If you are not pregnant, it is important that you use protection in the future unless you want to be pregnant. Stay safe, Blessing!

    • If your doctor did not give you any advice or any additional knowledge, perhaps it would be best for you to speak with another doctor. They will have more information regarding pregnancy and should be mindful enough to give you additional information or run more tests. For now, treat your body as though you are pregnant until you determine whether you are or are not. Enjoy life and remain positive as you move forward.

  15. I’ve tried all these things and it just won’t come. I have the symptoms of a period, like bloating, emotional change, cramps, and cravings. But I still haven’t gotten it.

    • If it is possible that you are pregnant, then it would be wise of you to take a pregnancy test. If you are unable to induce your period, then remain patient and take note of all of the changes that you are experiencing so you can best answer your doctor’s questions that they may gave. Treat your body as though you are pregnant to ensure the health of your potential child.

  16. I started taking home remedies 14th of July 2016 just like papaya, pineapple, dates, pomegranate, ginger with Jaggery n from last 2 days i started Place a hot water pack. But i still now get periods. Does aspirin will affect on me?

    • I noticed that you have posted this comment twice. I have answer this question in your other post. Thank you for your readership and sharing your ideas. Have a great day!

  17. Hi m eating home remedies from last 12-15 days like pomegranate, papaya, pineapple, Jaggery with Ginger, Dates but i still not get my periods. Does Aspirin will effect on me? Please guide me.

    • It would be best to take a minimal amount of pain killers until you can make an appointment with a medical professional. If you do not want to speak with a doctor, then change your diet and exercise patterns and see how they influence you. Take notes of these changes and see if certain foods or repeated activities have any affect. If you want to use pain killers for more than a few days at a time, it would be best to speak with a medical professional.

  18. Hello. I took the 2 aspirins, 1/2 tsp sugar and 1/2 tsp of honey and half a cup of water. It worked. I drank it yesterday 07/22/16 and I got my period today 07/23/16. Whohoooooooo 🙂 Thank you

  19. I don’t have a regular period. I wish I had a regular period every month like a normal woman. Any way, my husband went and got me some aspirins and everything else I had at home. I did just like you suggest; 2 aspirins, honey, sugar and half a cup of water. Last time I had my period was 2/26/16-3/4/16 and its now 7/22/16 and still no period. I feel tired, and my breasts hurt. I hope this works and helps me get my period back. BTW I am not pregnant- my period is just this way ever since it started. But I want ti have it every month. My Dr. Recommended birth control and I chose the patch but it makes my life so miserable, I decided to just stop using it. Any way thank you. I hope I can find my way back to this page to give a feedback on how things worked. 🙂

    • Continue to search for remedies that work for you to regulate your period. Sometimes this works to induce periods and sometimes is does not as each body reacts differently. Remain positive as you move forward and perhaps speak with an alternative doctor if you find no solutions through medical doctors. Alternative doctors can be extremely helpful at times.
