It is a huge inconvenience for the modern woman, because she is deeply involved in demanding life events like sporting events and business meetings. In addition, there are often period side effects like cramping, headaches and bloating. For these reasons and others, you have probably wondered how to stop your period once it starts.

Is It Actually Possible to Stop Your Period Once it has Started?

No, it’s not.

As much as you might wish it, there is no way to fully stop the flow once the menstrual period has started. Medications can slow the period and ease your cramps, but they won’t outright stop your period.

Your period is a reality that you’ll have to accept. Once you get to that point, you can look into ways to get relief and slow the process down.

If You can’t Stop it, How can you Lighten your Period or Shorten it?

Healthy foods like fruits and veggies should be on your daily diet, but incorporating more of them while you’re on your period can make you feel better. In particular, green beans are a good way to help during your period.

Ibuprofen can reduce period-associated pain and keep the flow down somewhat, too. So when you wonder how to stop your period once it starts, ibuprofen is a good bet.

Remember that you shouldn’t take more than three or four pills in any 24 hour period, since overdosing is a real danger. Speak with your physician about using heavy doses of ibuprofen before you try it.

Massaging the area of the abdomen that includes the uterus helps with cramps, giving your body a message to move the period along a bit. This should be done in your bedroom or bathroom.

While vinegar will not completely stop your period after it has started, it can slow down the flow and help you in managing it better. Mix two to three teaspoons of vinegar in a glass of water and drink it. Do this three times per day during your period.

OK, so sex won’t totally stop your period. But it can certainly make it pass more quickly. That’s because sex causes orgasmic contractions, which move the fluids more swiftly from your body.

Let your partner know you are on your period before you begin the act of sex. The shower is a great place for period sex, since the mess is cleaned as it occurs.

There isn’t a lot of scientific data behind the use of lemons, but it’s quite a popular method among older women. Suck on a slice of lemon for a bit, and it just may help in giving you a shorter period.

Exercise is important every day, and if you are physically fit, it can make your periods easier to tolerate. You can make your period lighter and shorter in a healthy way that is beneficial and sustainable over a long period of time.


  1. Use Birth Control

Birth control pills usually call for 21 days of taking pills, followed by one week of a placebo. That’s the week you’ll get your period. Hormonal contraceptives are an effective and safe way to regulate how much you menstruate, particularly if you have previously had excessively heavy or painful periods.

If you want to completely skip a period, skip the week of placebo pills and continue with the real contraceptives. This comes with some unpleasant or unpredictable side effects, so speak with your physician before you try this plan.

Oral contraceptive pills are only available by prescription. Discuss your wants and needs with your physician before you start the pill and when you’re on it.

10. Drink Lots of Water

Drinking even more water than usual is a great way to quicken your period. You should always drink plenty of water anyway, but while you’re on your period, drinking more water will help the fluids run more quickly through your body.

You can also drink gelatin mixed in water. It provides relief for three or four hours and is helpful in making your period easier to live with.

Discuss long-term options with your physician. To stop your periods for a year or two, you can get injections of Depo-Provera. These are received regularly from your GP.

There are even surgical options available that will stop periods permanently. These include removal of your womb, endometrial ablation and hysterectomy. These surgeries may be dangerous for you and can make later pregnancy at least complicated and potentially impossible. Spend some time speaking with your doctor before you choose a surgical option.

  2. I missed the placebo pills and went straight to the next pack but still got my period on the 3rd day . Desperately need to stop it asap!! Help

  5. I play basketball(wnba)and run track and the cramping hurts alot when i run and it slows me down and i am scared because periods have a smell(dead fish)and i dont want people to talk about and i could not find scented pads please tell me what to do
