Headaches can have a devastating effect on your ability to and quality of work. Once you have a headache in one part of your head, you cannot concentrate on your daily activities. For some people, the headache can be chronic. While for others, it may occur intermittently. It can occur in either or both portions of the head. If you have noticed more instances of headaches on the left side of your head, it may be the case because of the following causes:
Irregular flow of blood
Migraines may begin and remain localized on either side of your head. Although the exact grounds of migraine are not understood well, it is supposed that the narrowing of blood vessels and then their expansion increases the flow of blood to some specific portions of the brain, which generates pressure and causes pain. It can occur in left side of the head or any other area. There are many factors responsible for migraine such as diet, stress, alcohol, smells, loud sound, and such other triggers.
Although there is no permanent treatment for migraines, still your doctor may prescribe some medicines for relief from its symptoms. You can also use these remedies yourself to avoid triggering migraines:
Sleep: You must take good quality rest and sleep. Exhaustion is also one of the main causes of migraine headaches.
Relax: since migraine occurs due to constricted muscles, you can try to relax your shoulders’ and neck’s muscles. Also, you may incorporate meditation, exercise and yoga in your routine.
Avoid triggers: You must know some of the factors that trigger headache for you. You must avoid countering these triggers such as loud sound, coffee, tea, bright light, etc.
Lavender oil: It not only smells great, but it is also a very effective remedy for migraine headaches. You can either inhale it or apply it topically. Put 2-4 drops of the oil in every 2-3 cups of steaming water. Inhale the vapors of lavender oil to heal the headache. Some qualities of this oil can also be applied externally unlike other essential oils. But, you cannot take it orally.
Fix your diet: There are some foods which have been proved overtime to reduce the severity and frequency of migraine headaches. Some of such foods are dairy, peanut butter, chocolate, banana, avocado, citrus, meats containing nitrates, onions, foods containing MSG, red wine with amino acids, pickled and fermented foods.
Exercise: Along with healthy foods, you must exercise to relax your body muscles which cause tension. It is better to be as much active as possible. Plus, you must warm up before indulging into rigorous exercise. Obese people are more prone to migraines. Thus, it is always advisable to keep your body weight in control.
Reduce estrogen: Some of the medications these days contain estrogen, which may trigger migraine. Thus, you can ask your doctor to reduce the dose of medicine or substitute it.
The coating of sinuses in head gets infected or inflamed from allergies or pollutions, the condition of sinusitis occurs in people. But, it is often mistaken as migraine or any other kind of headache because the headache is very intense. But, the other symptoms of migraine do not occur in sinusitis.
If you are diagnosed with sinusitis caused due to bacterial infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics. If you take OTC or over-the-counter medicines for sinusitis, you must read the instructions and do not take them for over 10 days. Some of the home remedies of this condition include using a humidifier in the house. But, a clean filter must be used for this purpose. Else, there is a risk of spreading mold in the air. Another method is to take a steam bath and breathe deeply to open the nasal passages. Using a nasal saline solution also helps to keep the nasal passages moist.
When an artery in the head starts pouching to a large extent, the symptoms of aneurysm become visible. In extreme cases, the artery may become very large or may burst. And as the pressure builds up in the brain, the patient may experience severe headache in any part of the head. If the aneurysm is there on the left portion of the brain, the patient will experience left sided headache.
The treatment of aneurysm should be preferably undertaken by an authorized doctor only. The surgeons generally clip an aneurysm to prevent rupture. The doctors may even provide statins and recommend you to keep your blood pressure in control. You also need to quit smoking if you smoke regularly.
This form of headache is very severe in some cases. It generally begins in one portion of the head and spreads into other portions of the body including neck. The patient may even experience severe ache in eyes, tearing eyelids, drooping eyelids, stuffy or runny nose, and bulging of the side of the face with cluster headache. The patient may even have vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light. The pain in the head may be chronic or get away for some amount of time in a day.
Till date, there is no proven cure for cluster headache. However, the physicians do provide some the medications available for migraines to relieve the patient from symptoms. You can also use some of the home remedies mentioned below:
Sleep: As in the case of migraine, in cluster headaches as well, you must take proper sleep. The schedule must be set keeping in mind your work schedule.
Alcohol: Alcohol also acts as a trigger for cluster headache. Thus, when you are undergoing the phase of cluster headaches, you must steer clear of alcohol.
This type of headache often occurs in one side of the head with localized pressure in the form of dull pain. You may even undergo tightness or pain in your shoulders and neck. People with tension headaches are more sensitive to light, but they do not experience any other symptoms of migraine.
If you have undergone a diagnosis for tension headache, you may take prescription medicines to reduce the frequency of headaches as well as decrease their severity. Some of the medicines typically prescribed by the physicians are anti-seizure agents and antidepressants.
Lower stress: One of the most common triggers of tension headaches is stress. You must take all possible steps to reduce stress to prevent and help left sided headaches. You must relax whenever possible. You can also resort to yoga and meditation for reducing stress.
Use cold or hot: You can experiment with cold and hot compresses on the neck, shoulders and head. Both the temperatures have different relieving effect on different patients. Try them alternately.
Watch posture: You must sit and stand with correct posture for avoiding headaches. Keep your head high, body straight and shoulders flung back. Your muscles should be made to work as less as possible so that your body does not lose alignment. It will help your muscles to stay loose and the spine in alignment.
Acupressure: Some of the proven techniques to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches are acupuncture and acupressure. Though you need to get acupuncture done by a practitioner only, you can try acupressure on your own. On every point, you need to keep steady pressure for at least 30 seconds as you notice the symptoms of a headache.
In addition to the causes mentioned above, there are some other causes of left sided headache as well. Some of these causes are injury to neck or head, health conditions like heart diseases, shingles, high blood pressure, dehydration, tension, strain on eyes, allergic reactions, teeth problems, etc. Apart from all these you may not even notice causes like sleeping on an unsupportive cushion, which may severely affect the head.
