It is not a rare finding that your skin is peeling between toes. It is usually nothing to worry about and can be just an accompanying sign of a skin regrowth. It can be seasonal where it appears in the warmer months of the year due to excessive sweating and inappropriate shoe and socks wearing. It can be dry and flaky as well, which is more often in the colder months. There are other symptoms which can appear such as itchiness or even blisters. Since there are other symptoms which can indicate more serious conditions, it is got to be informed.
This is one of the most common cause of peeling skin between toes. Depending whether it’s summer or winter, it can be due to overheating the feet or due to dry conditions in the winter. As the warmer months come along, there is a lot of humidity and high temperature involved, which results in peeling the surface lining of the skin. This is worse in between the toes since there is less air coming through and the moist aggregates in those places. There is not as much air to dry it out and it could be inappropriate shoes and socks which don’t allow the skin to breathe. In the winter time, the skin needs more moisture since it’s dry and cold which doesn’t suit the skin. Your skin can be very itchy and flaky on the other parts of the body as well.
Treatment. You should hydrate yourself very well. In the summer, due to excessive water loss through sweat and in the winter to compensate and nurture the skin properly. You can use body lotions and oils which will lock all the moisture. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen in the summer to protect yourself and decrease a skin cancer risk.
Dehydration can be linked with cold winter months, but can be caused by overuse of drying soaps and body wash gels. This can dry out the skin leading to flaky and itchy skin. It is important not to lose all the moisture from the skin with the products that violate the right pH of the skin.
Treatment. Try to use some moisturizing gels and soaps for the skin with the right pH which is about 5.5 pH. This is good for the skin and won’t disrupt the skin surface and cause any depletion of the cells. Use lotions and oils to lock all the moisture inside and avoid hot baths and excessive swimming if you’re into sports that include water.
Athlete’s foot is a condition which is fungi caused. The fungus trichophyton grows in between the toes when the environment is right. This kind of organism likes humid, moist and warm, poor ventilated places like the feet. It is common for athletes and people who tend to stay long in the same socks, tight shoes and bad fabric that doesn’t breathe. Your skin can peel, cause cracking and redness followed up with itchiness and discomfort.
Treatment. Since this cause is a fungus, you need anti-fungal medicine from your doctor. This is usually a cream which you will have to apply for some time. Keep your feet dry and clean. You can use some baby powder to dry out the areas on your toes. Wash your feet with antibacterial soaps. You can also use tea tree oil which has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties. If certain complications occur, you might need antibiotics.
If you are allergic to certain material or if you went to the pool and you are allergic to chlorine from the water, you might notice that your skin starts to peel. This is also common in athletes that use shared showers and then walk barefoot. It can be also caused by some sanitary gels for mopping floors and detergent that you use for washing your clothes.
Treatment. If you notice some linked skin peeling to a certain cause, try to eliminate the potential allergen. You should change the detergent and try to wear some slippers when walking in public bathrooms. A doctor can also prescribe you some antihistaminics for allergy reduction.
Cellulitis is a rare condition which appears as a redness on the feet followed up with skin peeling and painful swelling. It is caused by bacteria which can spread to other parts of the body and cause a life-threatening condition. The feet look glossy and inflamed with the possibility of abscess formation with pus inside. You can also have a fever and even some serious symptoms like drowsiness, chills, lightheadedness, myalgia, sweating, lethargy. This could be a sign that the bacteria is spreading. The Staphylococcus or Streptococcus enters the skin through some skin disruption such as a cut, incision or an insect bite. It is also commonly linked with athlete’s foot complications and risk possibilities in diabetes, IV drug use, and weak immune system.
Treatment. Since the cause is bacteria, a doctor will prescribe you a treatment which includes antibiotics which you will have to intake for about 2-3 weeks. It can subside in a few days or maybe longer, depending on the stage. You can also take some pain killers if you have excessive pain and you should try to rest and lift your legs in order for it not to swell.
This is a form of skin eczema which is caused by an accelerated cycle of skin cell growth. The skin starts to grow rapidly, causing thick layer at the top which builds up over time, causing cell flaking. The skin is very itchy, dry and in silver scales. It is a chronical disease which does not have a proper treatment. There are good and bad periods of this condition.
Treatment. The therapy is focused on a skin cell growth reduction, which can be treated with light therapy. A doctor can also prescribe some topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, topical retinoids, calcineurin inhibitors, anthralin, etc.
Toe Box Dermatitis
Toe box dermatitis is the condition which is associated with wearing shoes with rubber toe box. The shoes lock in the moisture and the sweat from the feet, which can irritate the foot and lead to inflammation and dermatitis. This is more common in sensitive feet and excessive sweating. Feet can look red, flaky and inflamed.
Treatment. If you suffer from box dermatitis, you should eliminate any shoes which do not allow the feet to breathe. Avoid rubber toe box shoes or, at least, try to wear them not so often, maybe every other day. You can use some sprays and powders for drying the feet which will help with reducing excessive moisture. Change socks frequently and clean your legs on an everyday basis.
Home Remedy For Skin Peeling Between Toes
- Use lotions and oils to lock the moisture in. You can use coconut oil which is very hydrating and does not leave your skin feeling greasy. It is also antibacterial, so it will protect your skin from bacteria infections and kill the bad smell.
- If you suffer from dry skin, you can try also applying honey.
- When having dermatitis, you should practise putting your feet inside the water and apple cider vinegar solution. A mint juice can help as well.
