Thick Semen

Although most guys are quite frank in locker room discussions, few men bring up the topic of their semen quality. Semen is a mixture of different things, but it is most known for containing sperm. Depending on your personal health, the amount of water that you drink or hormonal problems, the thickness and appearance of your semen may change. If you are curious about why your semen seems to be thicker, then you are not alone. For the most part, it is perfectly normal for semen thickness to change, although it can be a sign of a different problem.

Why Does My Semen Seem Thick?

Semen may change in consistency over time. This may depend on how many times you have orgasmed recently, the frequency of sexual intercourse, your physical activity level and what you eat. Other than these factors, the following things may cause a change in the consistency of your semen.

You May Have an Infection

Your overall health is a major factor in how your semen appears. When there are sudden changes in your semen, it could be a sign of an infection. Often, an infection may be indicated by a foul or unusual smell in your semen. Your ejaculatory fluids may appear thicker, or the color could even take on a green or a yellow hue. If any of these symptoms occur, it is a sign that you may have an infection and should see your doctor for medical care.

You Could Be Dehydrated

It is entirely possible that you are dehydrated if your semen appears thicker. You may not be drinking enough water in your daily diet, or an excess of soda or coffee could be dehydrating you. Since this is a temporary condition, it is fairly easy to remedy. Drinking more water and avoiding diuretics like coffee should help your semen to return to normal.

Your Hormones Could Be Out of Balance

It is entirely possible that your thickened semen could be caused by hormones. If your hormones are out of balance, it could cause changes in your semen. When testosterone levels are imbalanced, it can make your semen seem thicker. Since it is hard to know if a hormonal imbalance is the cause, you should see your doctor for help. Your doctor can run blood tests to check for hormone balances or infections before providing you with the appropriate medical treatment.

What Should Semen Normally Look Like?

Although you are probably familiar with how your semen has looked in the past, it may be hard to remember exactly how it is supposed to look when you are suddenly having problems. Normally, semen will have a gray or cloudy white color. When it is healthy, it will have a pudding or jello-like consistency immediately after ejaculation. In the next 30 minutes, it will start to appear runny. Normal semen will smell slightly like chlorine and have a slightly salty, sweet taste.
